About Us

The Open Source Haggadah is a prototype -- a proof-of-concept for a software framework which would allow groups and individuals to compose their own prayerbooks online by compiling pre-written texts via a simple-to-use visual interface. The concept was based upon the ideas introduced by author Douglas Rushkoff, in his controversial and acclaimed book Nothing Sacred: The Truth About Judaism.

Though we share with our site's innumerable visitors their enthusiasm for the project, technical, licensing and financial limitations have unfortunately prevented us from taking The Open Source Haggadah (OSH) beyond the state of its initial launch in March of 2003.

Since that time, The Open Source Judaism Project, which created OSH, has gone through various transformations (among them, becoming an umbrella project of Matzat -- a non-profit organization founded by The Open Source Judaism Project's director, Daniel Sieradski), and our ideas and interests have grown far beyond OSH.

Though no further development work will take place on OSH itself, we are presently working to create a new software framework which incorporates and advances the technology we developed for OSH. We believe it will exceed all expectations had for this project, and that it may very well revolutionize the way in which Jews engage with Judaism.

If you are interested in learning more about our new project, Jew It Yourself, including available opportunities for volunteers and contributors, please e-mail Daniel Sieradski at director@matzat.org.il.
